Translations and retellings of "The Lord of the Rings" in Russian have existed since the 1960s in "Samizdat". Translators Zinaida Bobyr (it was she who created the first abridged version of the book), Alexander Gruzenberg, S. Umansky, and Vladimir Muravyov offered their own versions of translations, but no one was published. The first official edition, translated by Vladimir Muravyov and Andrey Kistyakovsky, was published only in 1982. Soviet readers were waiting for the continuation of Tolkien's epic for another seven years, the other two parts of the complete novel were not published until 1989.

First edition in Russian of a famous "The Fellowship of the Ring". Title and initials printed in blue and black. A very good copy in the original decorated cloth.
