The first edition of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in an abridged translation by Marina and Nickolai Chukovsky with illustrations by Vladimir Bekhteev.

The book was edited by the famous Russian and Soviet writer Korney Chukovsky (1882-1969). In the preface to the novel including a biography of Harriet Beecher Stowe he compared her work to Russian writers and their critical attitude to Russian serfdom similar to American slavery.

This translation turned out to be considerably more complete than any other version of 1920s. The second edition was published in 1950, and Chukovsky significantly changed his preface removing most of the author's biography and comparison with Russian literature.

Illustrations by Vladimir Bekhteev (1878-1971), an avant-garde painter and graphic artist, made the edition even more remarkable. They send the reader to the art of the avant-garde group "The Blue Rider", the part of which Bekhteev was. The first edition of this translation is rare.
