Longfellow H.W. Kniga dlya detei. Gayavata. Skazka iz zhizny severo-amerikanskyh indeitsev [The song of Hiawath. A tale from the life of North American Indians], thirty drawings by N. N. Karasin
"The Song of Hiawatha" was very popular in Russia. Russian poet D. L. Mikhailovsky published a translation of several chapters of the poem into Russian in the journal "Otechestvennye Zapiski" (1868-1869). For the first time, the great Russian writer and poet I. A. Bunin (future Nobel laureate) fully translated "The Song of Hiawatha". А. Bunin (future Nobel laureate). For this translation, he received the Pushkin Prize in 1903. His translation into Russian is still considered unsurpassed. For the first time the poem in his translation was published in the newspaper "Orlovsky Vestnik" in 1896. Later that year, the newspaper's printing office published "The Song of Hiawatha" as a separate book. Editions of Bunin's translation were published with classic illustrations by the artist Remington (an edition with a complete set of his illustrations was published in St. Petersburg in 1903).
However, in the shadow of Bunin's translation, there is another interesting edition of "Hiawatha" in 1890 (translated by Mikhailovsky) with drawings by the famous Russian artist Nikolai Karazin. Nikolai Nikolaevich Karazin (1842-1909) — Russian battle painter, graphic illustrator, was the first artist of tonal woodcuts in Russia. Perhaps the creator of the first Russian postcard (1901), a prolific writer (25 volumes of collected works). He created the original illustrations for the first separate edition (incomplete translation) of the world-famous "Hiawatha". Interesting cover, 30 expressive illustrations in the book.
A rare edition, Worldcat notes only three copies in libraries around the world.
